SVI Verniciatura Industriale inaugurated a new coating plant designed by Verona Impianti 2002 to easily switch from powder to liquid application and achieve optimal results.

Founded in 1974, SVI Verniciatura Industriale Srl specialises in dip and spray liquid and powder coating of cast iron castings and aluminium and steel parts. ver the years, SVI has also become a reference for the coating of components for agricultural machinery, gearmotors, industrial vibrators and marine engines.

SVI installed a dip coating plant for medium and large cast iron components in 1980, which was joined in 2001 by another system with the same characteristics but with doubled capacity, thanks to a 40,000-litre coating tank. The site of the company includes also manual deburring and shot blasting departments plus four other coating lines, composed by two semi-automatic systems (besides the one for dip coating operations) and one manual plant for solvent-based painting application on small batches or prototypes.

However, to stay competitive, SVI recently asked Verona Impianti 2002 for a solution capable of applying both liquid and powder paints depending on the needs and demands of the market: the new coating line offers greater flexibility, better performance and a more comfortable working environment. Designed to comply with Industry 4.0 parameters, the system also allows SVI to monitor and optimise the entire production process.

The features of the new powder and liquid coating system

Compared with the previous system, the only elements that remained unchanged were the loading and unloading areas and the 3-stage stainless steel pre-treatment tunnel (phosphate degreasing and two rinses), that had been installed in 2021 to replace the previous one. Verona Impianti 2002 thus designed and installed.

  • A monorail workpiece handling system.
  • A new drying oven after the pre-treatment tunnel.
  • A manual liquid painting booth.
  • An air-curtain baking/curing oven with a double blown air burner.

The company can then choose between liquid and powder application depending on the material to be coated and the associated production flow. Given the greater resistance and durability of powders, one- and two-component liquid paints are mainly used for parts that are to be repainted at the customer’s premises after assembly or that cannot be powder coated because they do not can withstand paint curing temperatures.

The advantages provided by the Verona Impianti 2002 coating plant

With the most recent line, designed and installed by Verona Impianti 2002 – a supplier with many years of experience in the design, production, and installation of systems and technologies t for pre-treatment, coating, and drying machines – SVI Verniciatura Industriale has ten to upgrade its equipment fleet to make the workflow more flexible and faster, create a cleaner and more comfortable work environment, improve coating performance, and implement Industry 4.0 parameters.

The diversification of the production flow

The overhead conveyor of the new coating plant of SVI

The company chose to use this new system alongside the dip coating one to be able to effectively meet any need of a fluctuating market, the evolution of which is so difficult to grasp. SVI can then manage batches according to the size of the components to be coated. On the new line provided by Verona Impianti 2002 it can in fact handle parts up to 900x900x1,410 mm that can weigh up to 250 kg, whereas in the dip coating line the workpieces can be up to 2,200 mm in height and half a tonne in weight.

The new plant therefore allows SVI to intercept ever-changing painting needs, expanding the range of available solutions while maintaining the high efficiency of its internal processes. The ovens and the overhead conveyor are in fact sized according to high productivity needs, while the installation of the two booths completes a flexible and high-performing plant.

Energy savings and environmental sustainability

The company looked for an eco-friendly plant solution that respected the external environment, due to its proximity to the city centre. To allow SVI to achieve significant energy savings and not impact the indoor and outdoor environment, Verona Impianti 2002 therefore adopted two targeted technical measures:

  1. The suction system of the dry liquid painting booth is installed on the floor, in order to facilitate cleaning operations and improve coatings results.
  2. The oven is equipped with two 400 kW convection burners to reach 220 °C required and air curtains designed to retain heat inside the oven and avoid dispersion.

360° Monitoring

All the equipment and technologies of the new coating plant designed by Verona Impianti 2002 are interconnected according to the 4.0 directives, in order to allow SVI to monitor all the data relating to the painting process in terms of consumption and timing, facilitating the cost analysis – which is a delicate operation in a context where the artifacts to be painted are always different from each other. In fact, the company offers a contractor service, therefore it is able to propose to the customer a coherent offer already in the estimate phase.

Turnkey coating plant in just two months

Work on the installation of the new painting system began in May 2023, and the line was already in full operation by mid-July. Verona Impianti 2002 has in fact guaranteed that the dismantling of the previous painting system and the installation of the new coating line would be completed quickly: its technical team managed to meet the planned delivery schedule, meeting the strict requirements imposed by SVI to reduce plant downtime.
